It may have all begun with one parent&#8217;s complaint about punishment given her child.<\/p>\n<p>Among the alleged perpetrators: the sheriff and mayor. But prosecutors would charge only Robin Byrum, Darlene Harris, Elizabeth &#8220;Betsy&#8221; Kelly, Robert &#8220;Bob&#8221; Kelly, Willard Scott Privott, Shelley Stone and Dawn Wilson \u2013 the Edenton 7.<\/p>\n<p>Along with sodomy and beatings, allegations included a baby killed with a handgun, a child being hung upside down from a tree and being set on fire and countless other fantastic incidents involving spaceships, hot air balloons, pirate ships and trained sharks.<\/p>\n<p>By the time prosecutors dropped the last charges in 1997, Little Rascals had become North Carolina&#8217;s longest and most costly criminal trial. Prosecutors kept defendants jailed in hopes at least one would turn against their supposed co-conspirators. Remarkably, none did. Another shameful record: Five defendants had to wait longer to face their accusers in court than anyone else in North Carolina history.<\/p>\n<p>Between 1991 and 1997, Ofra Bikel produced three extraordinary episodes on the Little Rascals case for the PBS series &#8220;Frontline.&#8221; Although &#8220;Innocence Lost&#8221; did not deter prosecutors, it exposed their tactics and fostered nationwide skepticism and dismay.<\/p>\n<p>With each passing year, the absurdity of the Little Rascals charges has become more obvious. But no admission of error has ever come from prosecutors, police, interviewers or parents. Little Rascals was an especially notorious example of a wave of \u2018satanic ritual abuse\u2019 day-care prosecutions during the &#8217;80s and early &#8217;90s &#8212; virtually all of them based on hysteria and a misguided campaign to \u2018Believe the Children.\u2019 Today no respected social scientist believes these bizarre claims were anything more than a \u2018moral panic.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"style184\">\u201cAlthough she ranked below District Attorney H. P. Williams and Assistant Attorney General Bill Hart, it was Nancy Lamb who served not only as the prosecution\u2019s closer in the courtroom, but also its public face. And it was Lamb who, after Williams dropped off the case, continued to cling to the discredited \u2018ritual abuse\u2019 fantasy and who vindictively conjured up an unrelated charge against Bob Kelly after his conviction had been resoundingly overturned by the North Carolina Court of Appeals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style184\">\u201cLittle Rascals will remain a stain on the state of North Carolina until the Edenton Seven receive a statement of innocence such as that given the Duke lacrosse defendants. Neither the prosecutors nor their ill-trained therapists have ever expressed any regrets or made any amends. To even be considered for district attorney, Nancy Lamb should be willing to address her responsibility. If she still wants to argue that the defendants were guilty, let her do so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"style360\" style=\"text-align: right;\"><em>\u2013 From a letter I wrote last week to the Elizabeth City\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailyadvance.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Daily Advance<\/em><\/a><em>, the only\u00a0daily newspaper in the seven-county First Prosecutorial District,\u00a0taking issue with its editorial support of Nancy Lamb\u2019s appointment\u00a0as district attorney.\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailyadvance.com\/opinion\/our-views\/our-view-mccrory-should-set-politics-aside-appoint-lamb-da-2183745\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Editorial is here<\/em><\/a><em>;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.littlerascalsdaycarecase.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/131005Advance.pdf\">page PDF<\/a>;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.littlerascalsdaycarecase.org\/?p=1101\">text cache<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"style184\">The 900-word editorial could come up with \u201conly one possible explanation for McCrory\u2019s reluctance to appoint her: partisan politics.\u201d Unmentioned was Lamb\u2019s responsibility in the district\u2019s most infamous case \u2013 perhaps the Advance has forgotten? But earlier I had attended Little Rascals. My parents had me and my younger brother checked over by an unbiased child psychiatrist in Greenville. This split the church right down the middle. Because the pastor and staff wouldn\u2019t take sides, quite a few people got mad as fire. A good handful left. Some (especially those against the Kellys) spoke harshly and rudely to both my dad and grandmother.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel most sorry for Bob and Betsy&#8217;s daughter, Laura. We had been in the same kindergarten class when the accusations started. My mom carpooled us. We did everything we could to be kind and remain friends with Laura and her family. I cannot imagine the pain and heartbreak they experienced.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLew, I know that&#8217;s a lot of information. Forgive me. I am happy to talk any time about the case or Little Rascals. The accusations and trial were a travesty and left so many people hurt and broken. No matter how much exoneration is given, the damage is already done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A few days passed before I heard from Buddy again: \u201cForgive me for being slow to respond. I happened to catch Covid, so the past week has been quite a struggle. Once I get through this (hopefully I&#8217;m on the tail end of it), we can plan to talk\u2026.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Two weeks later Buddy Hyatt was dead. We never talked. I\u2019m grateful for his big-hearted recollections and for his resolve to say more. If they later recant, that means they are under family pressure to protect the father and their turnabout is further proof of the crime.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style184\">\u201cSo no matter how much coercion was used to get an accusation and no matter if a child later retracted it, once Summit\u2019s incest theory was applied, a charge of abuse became irrefutable. Child protection workers ignored the fact that this logic had little to do with day care. After all, why would children staunchly defend abuse to protect an adult who wasn\u2019t part of the family? And if they had been so brutally attacked at school, why wouldn\u2019t they tell their parents?<\/p>\n<p class=\"style184\">\u201cTherapists and investigators came up with all sorts of rationales.
