It may have all begun with one parent&#8217;s complaint about punishment given her child.<\/p>\n<p>Among the alleged perpetrators: the sheriff and mayor. But prosecutors would charge only Robin Byrum, Darlene Harris, Elizabeth &#8220;Betsy&#8221; Kelly, Robert &#8220;Bob&#8221; Kelly, Willard Scott Privott, Shelley Stone and Dawn Wilson \u2013 the Edenton 7.<\/p>\n<p>Along with sodomy and beatings, allegations included a baby killed with a handgun, a child being hung upside down from a tree and being set on fire and countless other fantastic incidents involving spaceships, hot air balloons, pirate ships and trained sharks.<\/p>\n<p>By the time prosecutors dropped the last charges in 1997, Little Rascals had become North Carolina&#8217;s longest and most costly criminal trial. Prosecutors kept defendants jailed in hopes at least one would turn against their supposed co-conspirators. Remarkably, none did. Another shameful record: Five defendants had to wait longer to face their accusers in court than anyone else in North Carolina history.<\/p>\n<p>Between 1991 and 1997, Ofra Bikel produced three extraordinary episodes on the Little Rascals case for the PBS series &#8220;Frontline.&#8221; Although &#8220;Innocence Lost&#8221; did not deter prosecutors, it exposed their tactics and fostered nationwide skepticism and dismay.<\/p>\n<p>With each passing year, the absurdity of the Little Rascals charges has become more obvious. But no admission of error has ever come from prosecutors, police, interviewers or parents. But I didn\u2019t want my children exposed to such obvious and outward hatred&#8230;.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"style342\"><strong>What Edenton is like for her today:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"style184\">\u201cOnce Bob\u2019s verdict was overturned, that was the end of it. Now I go where I want and do what I want&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style184\">\u201cThings went very badly for the indicting parents. But they still believe \u2013 because they have to believe&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style184\">\u201cSome of them I will talk to in the grocery store or at school, but we are not welcome in each others\u2019 homes&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style184\">\u201cOur children went to school together, and they finished growing up together (without conflict). It was like when the adults went away, when the adults got tired of playing, the children were left to clean up the game&#8230;.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"style342\"><strong>How she looks back at the case:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"style184\">\u201cMy sister (who now lives in Raleigh) has a life we could never have imagined, a wonderfully normal life. Everyone I loved at Little Rascals is free. My children (now 32 and 28) are fine and healthy&#8230;. From 1995 to 2010, the U.S. prison population aged 55 or older nearly quadrupled&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style184\">\u201cOn average, it costs approximately twice as much to incarcerate someone aged 50 and over ($68,270) than a younger, more able-bodied individual ($34,135)&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style184\">\u201cThe elderly in prison also demonstrate a greater risk of injury, victimization, ailing health, and death than their younger counterparts&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style184\">\u201cThe phenomenon of accelerated aging, which can be attributed to the prevalence of environmental stressors coupled with a lack of access to holistic healthcare, means that the body of an incarcerated 50-year-old has a \u2018physiological age\u2019 that is 10\u00a0to 15 years older&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style184\">\u201cThe stated objectives of incarceration would suggest that correctional spending should be allocated among demographics in proportion to their public safety risk and potential for behavioral change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style184\">\u201cAging adults in prison have the lowest recidivism rate and pose almost no threat to public safety.
