Psychiatric Times<\/a>, I wrote editor-in-chief\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.upstate.edu\/search\/?tab=people&amp;ID=knollj\" target=\"_blank\">James L. Knoll IV<\/a>\u00a0to ask about the removal of Dr. Noll\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.garygreenbergonline.com\/w\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Psychiatric_Times_-_When_Psychiatry_Battled_the_Devil_-_2013-12-06.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">\u201csatanic ritual abuse\u201d essay<\/a>\u00a0from the Psychiatric Times website.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style184\">Did the journal plan to address in some fashion the issues raised in Dr.<br \/>\nNoll\u2019s piece? \u201cUnfortunately, I am not at liberty to comment on the situation,\u201d Dr. Knoll\u00a0replied.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style184\">Next I turned to Psychiatric Times\u2019\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.psychiatrictimes.com\/editorial-board\" target=\"_blank\">editorial board<\/a>, described on the site as \u201c(not) just figureheads with impressive r\u00e9sum\u00e9s&#8230;. They give us their frank and unblinking appraisal\u00a0of the contents of each and every issue&#8230;.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"style184\">This is from a letter I sent to 22 PT board members:<\/p>\n<p class=\"style405\">\u201cI am writing you in response to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/allen-frances\/righting-wrongs-setting-t_b_4718989.html\" target=\"_blank\">Dr. Allen Frances\u2019s call<\/a>\u00a0for psychiatrists to \u2018step forward and do the right thing\u2019 about the profession\u2019s failure to confront the &#8216;satanic ritual abuse&#8217; claims of the 1980s and early \u201990s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style405\">\u201cAs you know, Psychiatric Times removed from its website Dr. Richard Noll\u2019s history of the SRA era&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style405\">\u201cDr. Noll concluded by asking: \u2018Are we ready now to reopen a discussion on this moral panic? Will both clinicians and historians of psychiatry be willing to be on record? Shall we continue to silence memory, or allow it to speak?\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"style405\">\u201cHow do you, as a member of the Psychiatric Times editorial board, answer these questions?<\/p>\n<p class=\"style405\">\u201cWould you now be willing to join with Dr. Frances in formally setting the record straight about SRA and in making amends to the scores of wrongfully prosecuted victims of the moral panic?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"style184\">So far I have not been overwhelmed with responses to these questions. In fact, I have received only a single \u201cfrank and unblinking appraisal\u201d \u2013 from\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Thomas-G.-Gutheil\/e\/B001HPMSFW\/ref=ntt_athr_dp_pel_4\" target=\"_blank\">Thomas G. Gutheil<\/a>, professor of psychiatry, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard<br \/>\nMedical School.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style184\">\u201cI do agree (with Dr. Frances),\u201d he writes. &#8220;The 1992 FBI report compiled by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.littlerascalsdaycarecase.org\/?p=701\">Kenneth Lanning<\/a>\u00a0should have put an end to this, when he investigated many claimed cases from law enforcement viewpoint and in multiple cases found not a shred of\u00a0physical evidence, DNA, cells or bloodstains from butchered babies or sacrificed virgins.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style184\">\u201cThe problem is that social viruses like this are hard to assess and halt, like their biologic counterparts. I agree that individuals, especially in the legal system, should own up to their serious errors and miscarriages of justice, since improved science has blown up many claims, yet some prosecutors (e.g.,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.littlerascalsdaycarecase.org\/?p=1132\">Martha Coakley<\/a>\u00a0in Mass.) have not reversed themselves nor freed the imprisoned.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style184\">\u201cHowever, I am not sure the entire mental health professions should share the blame.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"style184\">To be sure, distribution of responsibility among the professions is uneven \u2013 the Little Rascals prosecutors called on no psychiatrists at all, only psychologists, off-brand psychotherapists, etc.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Feb. 20, 2014 Following up on the curious case of\u00a0Richard Noll v.
