As noted by\u00a0Gary Greenberg<\/a>, Richard Noll\u2019s\u00a0disappeared history<\/a>\u00a0of psychiatry and satanic ritual abuse \u201csingles out two psychiatrists \u2013 Bennett Braun and Richard Kluft \u2013 who were instrumental in giving legitimacy to the SRA accounts. They helped change the DSM to make Multiple Personality Disorder (thought to be caused by the abuse) seem more common, they started the International Society for the Study of Multiple Personality and Dissociation, and they founded a journal called Dissociation….\u201d<\/p>\n

If the SRA era was psychiatry\u2019s Wild West, then Braun and Kluft were… who? Butch and Sundance? Or Frank and Jesse?<\/p>\n

In \u201cRewriting the Soul: Multiple Personality and the Sciences of Memory<\/a>\u201d (1995) philosopher Ian Hacking pointed out an\u00a0editorial in Dissociation<\/a>\u00a0in which Kluft \u201cpleaded for moderation, but…\u00a0 acknowledged that powerful emotions were at work. He also raised the stakes by printing a comparison that I find rather odious. He noted that one party refers to Nazis and the Holocaust, asking, \u2018Should he or she be silent, emulating the \u201cgood Germans\u201d who did not speak out about the atrocities in their midst, and by his or her silence become a facilitator?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite such overheated comparisons, and his ludicrous estimates of an\u00a0epidemic of\u00a0 \u201cmultiples<\/a>,\u201d\u00a0Kluft at least claimed \u201cmoderation\u201d \u00a0\u2013\u00a0not so Braun<\/a>, whose excesses in patient treatment led to suspension of his Illinois medical license, closure of his hospital MPD unit and at least four out-of-court settlements, one for $10.6 million.<\/p>\n

Today he practices in\u00a0obscurity<\/a>, while Kluft concentrates on\u00a0stifling publication of incriminating journal articles<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
