But what happens when there is no DNA evidence to prove someone\u2019s innocence? What happens when there is only his word, and the mounded doubts of the team that prosecuted and convicted him? And what happens when \u2013 despite growing certainty that it has imprisoned the wrong man for more than 20 years \u2013 the Commonwealth of Virginia stands poised to keep him locked up, possibly forever?<\/p>\n<p class=\"style184\">\u201cOf all the maddening stories of wrongful convictions, Michael McAlister\u2019s may be one of the worst. For starters, he has been in prison for 29 years for an attempted rape he almost certainly did not commit&#8230;.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"style360\" style=\"text-align: right;\">\u00a0<em>\u2013 From \u201c<\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/articles\/news_and_politics\/jurisprudence\/2015\/04\/michael_mcalister_wrongful_conviction_will_gov_mcauliffe_exonerate_an_innocent.html\" target=\"_blank\"><em>This Man Deserves a Pardon<\/em><\/a><em>\u201d by Dahlia Lithwick at Slate (April 13)<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"style184\">\n<p class=\"style184\">Michael McAlister\u2019s story surely qualifies as \u201cone of the worst,\u201d but forgive me if I think Junior Chandler \u2013 coincidentally now serving his 29th year of imprisonment \u2013 has suffered every bit as much injustice.\u00a0 And in McAlister\u2019s case at least a crime was actually committed, just not by him.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>April 18, 2015 \u201cDNA testing has been used 329 times now to prove the innocence of people wrongly convicted of a crime.
