What if the Little Rascals Day Care case had also inspired a major theatrical release? What if several million moviegoers had watched the dramatic nobody-dunnit even as the real-life Edenton Seven were languishing in jail or standing\u00a0 trial?<\/p>\n<p class=\"style184\">For a brief moment, that seemed possible.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style184\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0525104\/\" target=\"_blank\">Kurt Luedtke<\/a>, screenwriter for the &#8217;80s hits \u201cOut of Africa\u201d and \u201cAbsence of Malice,\u201d was outraged after seeing the initial \u201cInnocence Lost\u201d in 1991. \u201cYou can\u2019t hold people that long without presenting the evidence,\u201d he told the Charlotte Observer.<br \/>\nNow retired and living in Michigan, Luedtke recalls his \u201cindignation mounting and (thinking) I had to do something about the preposterousness of what was going on&#8230;.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"style184\">Alas, his idea apparently made it no further than a preliminary meeting in New York with Bikel and \u201cFrontline\u201d founder David Fanning: \u201cI can\u2019t remember why we didn\u2019t go forward; maybe I had another job.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>May 30, 2015 Ofra Bikel\u2019s eight hours of \u201cInnocence Lost\u201d were surely powerful, but the narrowness of PBS\u2019s audience limited their impact.
