A three-member panel of the Massachusetts Department of Corrections has now decided that, since the prisoner has refused participation in treatment programs for sex offenders, he was considered to be \u2018in denial.\u2019 Permission for him to appear before the Board that could grant early parole would therefore be denied.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"style360\"><em>\u2013 From \u201c<\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/SB1019426245215079160\" target=\"_blank\"><em>How to Extort a Confession<\/em><\/a><em>\u201d in the Wall Street Journal (April 22, 2002)<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"style184\">Steadfast in his supposed \u201cdenial,\u201d Amirault wouldn\u2019t be paroled until 2004 \u2013 18 years into his 40-year sentence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style184\">Compared with Junior Chandler, however, he was lucky. Chandler\u2019s two consecutive life sentences have made him ineligible for parole. For a brief moment during his long and maddening appeals process, in 2008, it seemed those life sentences would be made concurrent \u2013 thus qualifying him for parole consideration. But a switch in judges, orchestrated by the attorney general\u2019s office, vaporized that prospect.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style184\">A footnote: The North Carolina Department of Correction has its own\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.doc.state.nc.us\/dop\/health\/mhs\/special\/soardesc3.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Sexual Offender Accountability and Responsibility<\/a>\u00a0program. \u201cThrough psycho-educational modules, behavior techniques and empathy training,\u201d its website says, \u201cS.O.A.R. participants learn that sexually abusive behavior is both controllable and manageable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"style184\">Junior Chandler recalls having been invited to participate, but &#8230;. \u201cThey said I had to admit I was guilty.
