Why? Because few things exemplify the overreach of an all-too-powerful government (better) than one that yanks away an individual\u2019s freedom without legal justification&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConservatives in the heavily Republican Texas legislature have embraced some of the most far-reaching criminal justice reforms in the country&#8230;.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><em>\u2013 From \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.stltoday.com\/news\/opinion\/editorial-shame-and-joy-behind-exonerations\/article_8608abcc-3507-59c2-80ab-86ef6c1accdc.html\" target=\"_blank\">Shame and joy behind 149 exonerations<\/a>\u201d\u00a0in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch (Feb. 7 editorial)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And how is North Carolina\u2019s own heavily Republican legislature taking up the cause of criminal justice reform? With the piously labeled\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsobserver.com\/news\/local\/crime\/article28770190.html\" target=\"_blank\">Restoring Proper Justice Act<\/a>,\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.littlerascalsdaycarecase.org\/?p=1965\" target=\"_blank\">text cache<\/a>), which both conceals information on the drugs used for capital punishment and repeals a law requiring a physician be present.\u00a0 Sponsoring Rep. Leo Daughtry\u00a0railed against \u201croadblocks in front of the death penalty (that) have stopped us from using the punishment\u201d for the past decade.<\/p>\n<p>Had Daughtry had his way, death row inmates <a href=\"http:\/\/www.littlerascalsdaycarecase.org\/?p=1442\">Henry McCollum and Leon Brown<\/a>\u00a0would long since have been executed \u2013 instead of exonerated and then pardoned by the same governor who blithely signed the Restoring Proper Justice Act into law.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1707\" src=\"http:\/\/www.littlerascalsdaycarecase.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/LRDCC20.jpg\" alt=\"LRDCC20\" width=\"132\" height=\"20\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Feb. 11, 2016 \u201cSignificant criminal justice reforms (are needed) to minimize the chances of wrongful prosecution in the future. \u201cSome might dismiss such goals as a liberal utopian ideal, but criminal justice reform is being embraced nationwide by tea party conservatives.
