\u201cThe American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children [is] presenting a \u2018special issue\u2019 of one of its publications devoted to [Differential response<\/a>]\u00a0\u2013 or rather, devoted to bashing DR….<\/p>\n

\u201cAPSAC\u2019s track record for getting child welfare issues right is less than distinguished. As Debbie Nathan and Michael Snedeker explain in Satan\u2019s Silence<\/em><\/a>,\u00a0APSAC was formed in the 1980s largely by well-meaning \u2018professionals\u2019 who promoted claims of a supposed epidemic of mass molestation and satanic ritual abuse in day care centers.<\/p>\n

\u201c \u2018From its inception,\u2019 Nathan and Snedeker write, \u2018APSAC\u2019s leadership roster was a veritable directory of ritual-abuse architects.\u2019\u00a0 Kee MacFarlane<\/a>,\u00a0who led the questioning of children in the notorious McMartin Preschool case, served on APSAC\u2019s board \u2013 and received the group\u2019s Outstanding Professional award \u2013 a decade after McMartin.\u00a0 And in 1997, three years after writing an article promoting the idea that there really were secret tunnels under the McMartin Preschool, Roland Summit<\/a>,\u00a0another former board member, received the group\u2019s Lifetime Achievement award.\u201d<\/p>\n

Differential response \u2013 a less adversarial, more collaborative approach to reports of child abuse and neglect \u2013 isn\u2019t a subject\u00a0I\u2019m well-informed on. But Wexler\u2019s characterization of APSAC\u2019s culpability for the day-care panic can\u2019t be disputed.<\/p>\n
