The field of child maltreatment and interpersonal violence has certainly had its share of misguided ideas, from satanic ritual abuse hysteria to multiple personality disorder treatment centers.\u00a0 How did this field get so many things so wrong?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Sorry I missed such a provocative self-examination! [I\u2019ll post APSAC\u2019s video soon.]\n<p>I asked Wexler, executive director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/nccpr.info\/\" target=\"_blank\">National Coalition for Child Protection Reform<\/a>,\u00a0whether sanctioning the pet rock analogy might signify APSAC\u2019s tacit disowning of\u00a0 the \u201csatanic ritual abuse\u201d myth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wouldn&#8217;t call it disowning,\u201d he said. \u201cOver the years their position seems to have evolved into \u2018Well, yes, some people may have been a little overzealous, but&#8230;\u2019\u00a0 At one point, even Roland Summit, in his \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ipt-forensics.com\/journal\/volume7\/j7_2_1_15.htm#en78r\" target=\"_blank\">Tunnels<\/a>\u2019 article,\u00a0no less, tried to cast himself as falling between two extremes in the debate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat they have not done, of course, is apologize to the children victimized by the McMartin madness, and withdraw the awards given to Summit and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.littlerascalsdaycarecase.org\/?p=448\">[Kee] MacFarlane<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nor, of course, have they apologized to the wrongfully prosecuted defendants in cases such as McMartin and Little Rascals.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1707\" src=\"http:\/\/www.littlerascalsdaycarecase.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/LRDCC20.jpg\" alt=\"LRDCC20\" width=\"132\" height=\"20\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Oct. 5, 2016 Richard Wexler\u2019s unequivocal recollection\u00a0of how the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children promoted the \u201csatanic ritual abuse\u201d day-care panic made me curious about what APSAC might have to say about the subject today.
