It\u2019s worth it to remind people of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"style173\" style=\"text-align: right;\"><em>\u2013 Legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin, interviewed on CNN (Nov. 15) about the Penn State case<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"style184\">In fact, deep distinctions separate Penn State and the \u201cmulti-victim, multi-offender\u201d \u2013 MVMO, in the sex-crime argot \u2013 accusations typified by McMartin and Little Rascals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style184\">Since 1995, Ontario Consultants on Religious Tolerance has investigated 40 alleged MVMOs at 24 locations around the world.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.religioustolerance.org\/ra_case.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Number of substantiated instances of ritual abuse: zero<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style184\">According to its research, \u201cAny criminal acts were non-ritual abuse by a single perpetrator&#8230; Almost all the crimes with which people were charged never happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"style184\">Regardless, Toobin\u2019s reminder is a welcome counterpoint to the Judge Nancy Grace school of instant verdicts.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jan. 11, 2012 \u201cIt\u2019s worth remembering, in the 1980s we had a whole spate of false accusations of&#8230; sexual abuse of children.
