What happens to a social scientist who builds her career on exposing illusory \u201csex rings\u201d and \u201critual abuse\u201d at day cares? And, more specifically, whose\u00a0seminar at Kill Devil Hills<\/a>\u00a0apparently seeded the hysteria behind the prosecution of the Edenton Seven?<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re\u00a0Ann Wolbert Burgess<\/a>, it\u2019s no problem. You just plunge ahead \u2013 and don\u2019t look back.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s how Debbie Nathan and Michael Snedeker described Burgess in 2001 in \u201cSatan\u2019s Silence: Ritual Abuse and the Making of a\u00a0 Modern American Witch Hunt\u201d:<\/p>\n

\u201cpromoter of the use of children\u2019s drawings to diagnose sexual abuse, developer of the idea of the sex ring, participant in developing the case that imprisoned the Amirault family and currently a researcher into the traumatic aftereffects of ritual abuse.\u201d<\/p>\n

For some people, that would be a career\u2019s worth of wrongheaded ideas. But Burgess, now professor of psychiatric mental health nursing at Boston College, continues to accumulate merit badges on new topics such as heart attack victims, AIDS, infant kidnapping, online predators, nursing home abuse, women in prison, mass murder and elder abuse. Here she is in Raleigh on May 29\u00a0testifying as \u201can expert in crime scene classification and offender typology.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

Whew.<\/p>\n
