{"id":746,"date":"2012-12-10T14:08:40","date_gmt":"2012-12-10T14:08:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.littlerascalsdaycarecase.org\/?p=746"},"modified":"2016-01-11T15:01:45","modified_gmt":"2016-01-11T15:01:45","slug":"journal-editors-find-excuses-to-avoid-retraction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.littlerascalsdaycarecase.org\/?p=746","title":{"rendered":"Journal editors find excuses to avoid retraction"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"style187\" style=\"text-align: right;\">Dec. 10, 2012<\/p>\n<p class=\"style184\">I\u2019ve been surprised \u2013 naively, I suppose \u2013 by the refusal of professional journals such as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.littlerascalsdaycarecase.org\/?p=723\">Nursing Research<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.littlerascalsdaycarecase.org\/?p=736\">Child Abuse &amp; Neglect<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.littlerascalsdaycarecase.org\/?p=741\">Relational Child &amp; Youth Care Practice<\/a>\u00a0to retract articles that supported the moral panic of ritual abuse in day cares.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style184\">The editors\u2019 common justification is that they published no \u201cspecific errors,\u201d such as citing the Little Rascals case by name. This seems to me a narrow and disingenuous view. These articles are wrong to the bone, as wrong as if they had been based on cold fusion or the Protocols of Zion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style184\">Here\u2019s what the Charlotte Observer, my former employer, had to say in 2006 about how it had contributed to the infamous Wilmington coup d\u2019etat of 1898:<\/p>\n<p class=\"style295\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cAn apology is inadequate to atone for the Observer&#8217;s role in promoting the white supremacist campaign. But an apology is due&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style295\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cWe apologize to the black citizens and their descendants whose rights and interests we disregarded, and to all North Carolinians, whose trust we betrayed by our failure to fairly report the news and to stand firmly against injustice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"style184\">Newspapers, as \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/articles\/news_and_politics\/press_box\/2010\/08\/who_said_it_first.html\" target=\"_blank\">the first rough draft of history<\/a>,\u201d enjoy and deserve some leeway in reaching their standards of accuracy. But the editors at the Observer (and other participating North Carolina dailies) didn\u2019t quibble over \u201cspecific errors.\u201d They addressed the root defect in their coverage.
