John says he and David were both molested, but David says it didn\u2019t happen. Thus the evidence is 50\/50 on John and 50\/50 on David. They can\u2019t be both right.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style184\">\u201cWhat now? If David keeps denying, he is dropped from the investigation, and the negative evidence on John exits with David. Meanwhile, John\u2019s parents are not told that David denies, and John\u2019s case goes ahead. From 50\/50, the allegation has become 100 percent true.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style184\">\u201cFor this investigation to inevitably produce more victims of abuse, three things are necessary:<\/p>\n<p class=\"style184\">\u201c<strong>1.<\/strong>\u00a0Parents are told that their child was named by others as abused, but not told that their child was not abused according to still other children.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style184\">\u201c<strong>2.<\/strong>\u00a0Parents are told that denial by their child is a sign of abuse and that therefore the child should be questioned by therapists until he admits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style184\">\u201c<strong>3.<\/strong>\u00a0In some therapy sessions, the children do disclose even if they were not abused.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style184\">\u201cDid the prosecution in the Little Rascals investigate in such a manner? The (North Carolina) Appeals Court certainly was of that opinion. It was the principal reason the convictions of Robert Kelly and Dawn Wilson were overturned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"style173\" style=\"text-align: right;\"><em>\u2013 From \u201c<\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.littlerascalsdaycarecase.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/130301AOberschallWhyFalse.pdf\"><em>Why False Beliefs Prevail<\/em><\/a><em>: the Little Rascals Child Sex Abuse Prosecutions\u201d by Anthony Oberschall in \u201cEssays in Honor of Raymond Boudon\u201d (2000)<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"style184\">Oberschall doesn\u2019t use the term, but I\u2019m reminded of the widespread and pernicious \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/skepdic.com\/filedrawer.html\" target=\"_blank\">file drawer effect<\/a>\u201d \u2013 that is, \u201cthe practice of scientific researchers to file away studies with negative outcomes.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>March 27, 2013 \u201cAuthorities fed&#8230; parents and public (in Edenton) a biased reading of the evidence, but few realized it was biased. \u201cConsider the following: John and David, two friends in the day care, are both questioned.
