{"id":903,"date":"2013-04-03T23:42:47","date_gmt":"2013-04-03T23:42:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.littlerascalsdaycarecase.org\/?p=903"},"modified":"2016-07-04T13:47:47","modified_gmt":"2016-07-04T13:47:47","slug":"oh-those-spoilsports-voicing-disbelief-and-skepticism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.littlerascalsdaycarecase.org\/?p=903","title":{"rendered":"Oh, those spoilsports, voicing &#8216;disbelief and skepticism&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"style187\" style=\"text-align: right;\">April 3, 2013<\/p>\n<p class=\"style184\">In my fruitless attempt to extract a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.littlerascalsdaycarecase.org\/?p=736\">retraction<\/a>\u00a0from the journal Child Abuse &amp; Neglect, I quoted only the abstract of \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.littlerascalsdaycarecase.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/130415KelleyBrantWaterman.pdf\">Sexual Abuse of Children in Day Care Centers<\/a>\u201d by Susan J. Kelley, Renee Brant and Jill Waterman.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style184\">But because the 1993 article continues to be cited in the literature \u2013\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0160252712000453\" target=\"_blank\">most recently<\/a>\u00a0in the International Journal of Law and Psychiatry \u2013 it deserves a more detailed review.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style184\">Most offensive to me is the authors\u2019 use of ostensibly sophisticated statistics. For example: \u201cThe mean number of different types of sexual acts per child ranged from 5.3 sexual acts per child in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.littlerascalsdaycarecase.org\/?p=522\">(Kathleen Coulborn) Faller\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0(1988) sample to 6.6 different types of sexual abuse per child in Kelley\u2019s (1989) study.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"style184\">Can\u2019t you just picture the authors\u2019 computers straining under the weight of all their meticulous research? In reality, of course, the \u201cmean number of different types of sexual acts per child\u201d was&#8230; zero.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style184\">And the anecdotes! What ever were Kelley, Brant and Waterman thinking as their fingers typed such unfounded claims as these:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"style184\">\u201cForeign objects used to penetrate children in day care center cases have included such items and pencils, needles, knives, scissors and crucifixes.\u201d<\/li>\n<li class=\"style184\">\u201cAllegations of pornographic photographs and videos being taken of children in day care center cases sometimes surface&#8230;. Unfortunately, in very few cases have law enforcement officials been able to locate the pornography.\u201d<\/li>\n<li class=\"style184\">\u201cChildren who have been ritualistically abused describe participation in group ceremonies, use of chants and songs, adults dressed in costumes and masks, threats with supernatural powers&#8230;.the sacrifice of animals, the ingestion of blood, feces and urine, and murders.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"style184\">Despite the authors\u2019 unbridled certitude, they can\u2019t help complaining that \u201cOne of the first complications in the evaluation of ritualistic abuse cases is the frequent disbelief and skepticism on the part of the professionals secondary to the bizarre and extreme nature of the allegations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"style184\">\u201cComplications,\u201d indeed.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>April 3, 2013 In my fruitless attempt to extract a\u00a0retraction\u00a0from the journal Child Abuse &amp; Neglect, I quoted only the abstract of \u201cSexual Abuse of Children in Day Care Centers\u201d by Susan J.
